Susie Is Gone
Jul 22nd
Our little girl Susie has left us to be with her brother Hobbes. She passed this afternoon after a short fight with cancer. She never complained and always acted as if nothing was wrong. We had her for 17 years and she was always the sweetest, most lap-friendly cat in the world. She will be sorely missed.
Severe Weather Alert!
Jul 21st
It’s a rather nice day here in Phoenix. It’s only going to be around 100… Whoa! I’m not in Phoenix, I’m in Northwestern Oregon! Yes, people, I am now a confirmed Oregonian. I KNOW that 100 aint much to an Arizonan and I KNOW that I spent 38 years there in Southern Arizona, but NOW my blood has thickened up considerably. This shit is HOT! I think I’ll sit in my 70 degree computer room with a 15″ fan pointed at me (on HIGH) and play with the computer the rest of the day. And for those interested, here is the alert the weather guessers are yelling about:
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT SUNDAY.
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT SUNDAY. A HOT AIR MASS OVER THE REGION WILL BRING TEMPERATURES TO AROUND 100 TO 105 DEGREES TO THE INTERIOR LOWLANDS OF NORTHWEST OREGON AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND 95 TO 100 DEGREES IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE COAST RANGE AND CASCADE FOOTHILLS TODAY. ONLY SLIGHT COOLING IS EXPECTED EACH DAY FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. IN ADDITION TO THE HOT DAYTIME WEATHER…OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE MID 60S IN SOME LOCATIONS…LIMITING THE COOLING OF HOMES WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING.
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF DANGEROUSLY HOT WEATHER WILL OCCUR…CREATING A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT RELATED ILLNESS IS LIKELY. CHILDREN…ELDERLY AND
PEOPLE WITH CHRONIC AILMENTS ARE USUALLY THE FIRST TO SUFFER FROM THE HEAT. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS…STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM…STAY OUT OF THE SUN…AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS. DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS IN VEHICLES.
My Music
Jul 13th
Just a quick note to let everybody know I have found -THE- Web-based music site. They stream my kind of music 24/7/365. If you like light electronic (There are literally DOZENS of genres in electronic music – ask me about it sometime) then this is the place. Give it a listen – my 72 year-old dad liked it, so it can’t be ALL bad. He doesn’t like ANYTHING that I like, so this is REALLY something in my universe.
Thanks to Andy for pointing this out to me!

Windows Vista Beta 2 Lives!
Jul 4th
I installed Windows Vista Beta 2 on a spare hard drive I had laying around and I have to say, I’m a little impressed! It’s flashy, with lots of animated windows opening and closing, transparency in window title bars, cool new icons and other eye food. Those of you that know me KNOW I’m a sucker for eye candy in regards to stuff like this and Vista just tickles me to death. In the important parts of Windows to the rest of you, Vista was VERY easy to install with a minimum of questions and key smashing – Tell it what language, time zone and the CD Key and it does the rest. It took a while, but I didn’t have to babysit it for an hour answering a bunch of dumb questions. Vista installed almost all of my devices without any wizards or further questions. I say ‘almost’ as my scanner (A Canon U1200) needed to driver disk that came with it. Other than that, I was done and surfing immediately. Auto detection of my LAN, immediate download of any updates, and easy Email setup. As this Beta won’t expire till next year, I just might stick with this for a while. SO FAR, it’s a hoot to use.
